2020 Was the Worst Year for Fatal Car Accidents in Philadelphia in 23 Years

December 10, 2020
By Steven Barrett

What’s Happening?

According to Ryan Briggs, data reporter for WHYY, Philadelphia police counted 111 fatalities so far this year of drivers, passengers, cyclists and pedestrians in traffic related accidents. Read article.

This is a 54% increase in fatalities since last year. So even with COVID, where driving and gas consumption have been down, more fatal crashes are occurring. According to Briggs’ research — the stay-at-home orders and early last call rule “put in effect earlier in the year when the pandemic took off hasn’t curbed crash rates.” And we still have the Holiday season to go — one, of course, known for an increase in alcohol consumption and vehicular accidents.

What You Should Do If You Are In An Accident

We have been advising victims of car accidents and their families for decades and if you or a loved one is involved in a crash, PLEASE do the following:

  1. Call the police immediately— even if you think no one is injured.
  2. Ask the other driver for his/her drivers license, owners card and insurance card and take a photo of all the information on them.
  3. Take pictures of the scene, the condition of your car, and the other vehicles involved.
  4. Find out where the cars are being towed and write it down.
  5. If an ambulance is on the scene, write down where the injured party is being taken.
  6. Get witnesses’ contact information.
  7. Write down what happened in your own words.
  8. DO NOT discuss your opinion of the fault or cause of the accident with anyone at the scene. Only provide facts to the officer.
  9. Call me as soon as possible for a free consultation at 215-661-0400.
